PRESS RELEASE, PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Cowell College, Stevenson College and the Department of Languages and Applied Linguistics will present the 22nd season of the Miriam Ellis international Playhouse (MEIP XXII), May 31, June 1, and June 2, at 7:00 PM in the Stevenson Event Center at UCSC. The program of fully-staged multilingual performances in French, Japanese, and Spanish, with English supertitles, will be performed by Language students and directed by their instructors. There is no admission charge; parking in adjacent lots is $5.00.
This year's French presentation will feature an adaptation of "Le Voyageur sans bagage" (The Traveller Without Luggage), adapted and directed by Renée Cailloux from the eponymous play by Jean Anouilh.
After a hiatus, we are delighted to present a piece in Italian with "Il Dottor Niù" (Doctor New) by Stefano Benni, adapted and directed by Tonia Prencipe and Gabriella Notarianni-Burk.
Japanese will offer us a traditional comic theater piece, "狂言 しびり" (Pins and Needles), from the Okura Kyogen School collection of scripts, directed by Sakae Fujita.
Finally, Spanish will bring us "El Censo" (The Census), a play by Emilio Carballido, adapted and directed by Carolina Castillo-Trelles.
Over the years, our multilingual theater presentations have attracted loyal audiences, who look forward to experiencing their native or acquired languages in this unusual format, and we cordially invite the community to attend this year’s presentation.
