Placement guidelines for French

FALL QUARTER: you will need to attend an orientation session on either Tuesday, September 22, 2009, 1:00-1:30pm, Cowell 131 or Wednesday, September 23, 1:00-1:30pm, Cowell 134. Orientation begins promptly at 1:00pm. During orientation, the various course offerings will be explained, as well as the format of the oral placement exam. Students will sign up during the orientation for a 10 minute time slot for an individual placement exam. These exams will begin at 1:30pm in faculty offices following the orientation.

WINTER and SPRING: If you have had any previous study of French, you will need to take a short oral placement exam to determine which class best suits your skill level. You may take it with Angela Elsey or Greta Hutchison during office hours.

The program at UCSC is conducted entirely in French, with students expected to participate in class speaking in French. These guidelines, developed by the French program faculty, will help you make a preliminary placement in a French class. If your background contains little or no speaking, lower your placement. Please be prepared for adjustments to be made during the first week of classes, based upon the evaluation of your instructor and your own level of comfort.

French 1, 2, and 3 represent the first year contact with the basics of French grammar, vocabulary and culture.

French 4, 5, and 6 constitute a full year review of grammatical elements with more complexity required. Study of French texts including short stories, plays and novels. Placing in French 5 or 6 is possible but would mean you are beginning in the middle of the year-long review sequence.

IF YOU HAVE NEVER TAKEN FRENCH BEFORE: enroll in French 1
