French language

Courses and majors

Students of French may choose a course of study that meets their specific needs. Those interested in language acquisition skills can enroll in French language courses from beginning to advanced levels.

For courses offered in 2009-2010, see our program . The times and locations of French classes are accessible through the Courses link above.

French placement interviews/tests

All students are expected to come to the Fall meeting and placement interview. This first meeting in September consists of a presentation of the French program and is followed by an oral placement interview in small groups. Some of you may determine the class level most suitable for you at UCSC by consulting the placement sheet but still are required to come to the September meeting. The placement sheet gives a set of useful indications aiming at placing you at the correct level. Many of you, however, will need additional help or simply will want to check the appropriateness of your placement with a faculty member.

For other quarters, please visit one of the French faculty during the previous quarter. In any case, please show up for the first class meeting and talk to the faculty if there is any concern about placement.

Education Abroad Program

Students with various levels of French can apply to the highly recommended Education Abroad Program, which has five centers in France. For more information, go to the "Education Abroad" link, in the navigation menu to your left.
