Placement and Articulation Information

Articulation Information

Several California Community Colleges offer language courses that, upon successful completion, are considered equivalent to language level 2, 3, or 4 at UCSC. Information about articulation of language courses between California Community Colleges and UCSC is available at Assist.

Example:

  • Chinese:  1 full year of CC with a grade of B- or higher in both/all classes = placement into CHIN 2
  • French:   1 full year of CC with a grade of B- or higher in both/all classes = placement into FREN 3; 2 full years of CC with a grade of B- or higher in all classes = placement into FREN 4
  •  German:  1 full year of CC with a grade of B- or higher in both/all classes = placement into GERM 3
  •  Italian:  1 full year of CC with a grade of B- or higher in both/all classes = placement into ITAL 3
  • Japanese:  1 full year of CC with a grade of B or higher in both/all classes = placement in JAPN 2
  • Spanish:  1 full year of CC with a grade of B- or higher in both/all classes = placement into SPAN 3

Any student who has placed into a language via articulation is welcome to take the regular placement assessment if they wish. In the event that the placement level via articulation and the score on the placement assessment differ, the higher level will be used.

Please consult the Schedule of Classes to determine which language courses are offered each quarter. Questions about enrolling in a language course in your first quarter can be directed to the advisor, Janet Morales (languages@ucsc.edu) for Languages and Applied Linguistics.

If you do not have prior knowledge of a language, enroll in level 1; no placement assessment is needed, with the exception of Spanish (a placement assessment is required even to enroll in Spanish 1).
