Budget fact sheet

Language program expenses:
The following table gives total expenses for languages, over the ten years for which data are available. “Total exp.” means expenditure that includes TAS money (Temporary Academic Staffing money), Academic Senate salaries, Staff salaries, benefits, operational expenses. “Per cap. exp.” is how much money is spent for language training at UCSC per student enrolled (i.e., Total expenditure divided by Campus enrollment). As the second table shows, about 3.5% of the total credits delivered by UCSC are language credits, since there is no language requirement on our campus. The “Per cap.” number, especially when adjusted for inflation in 2004 dollars, simply gives an indication of the general trend in language expenditures.

Tenure and non-tenure trend in the past thirty years:
According to Faculty Matters (Newsletter of the American Association of University Professors, Fall 2005), page 1, “contingent faculty (part- and full-time non-tenure-track instructors) now account for 65 percent of all faculty in US degree-granting institutions, up from 58 percent in 1995 and 43 percent in 1975.” (Source: U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, Integrated Post-secondary Education Data System, Fall Staff Survey.)
